‘D’ Lessons…

Our lives hold no promises, no guarantees,
We all have a challenge and that includes me.
My challenge lies hidden, just under my skin,
But each day it reminds me, again and again.

Lying quiet and silent; it’s not easy to see,
But it rages inside me with such complexities.
It waits for a chance to attack and destroy,
It’s a hard thing to battle for a 10-year old boy.

It takes work and dedication so I don’t feel bad,
Some times I get scared, some times I get mad.
I have medicines and technology, for this I am glad,
But the best things I have are my mom and my dad.

My mom vowed to guard me, to help me survive,
This ‘D’ would not take me while she was alive.
She cleared all her plans for the rest of my days,
‘D’ picked the wrong fight; mom stands in its way.

Mom did all she could to make my life right,
I couldn’t have done it without her help to fight.
And when I stopped trying and wanted to flee,
She was there to take over and battle for me.

Looking back I remember everything she has done,
She prepared me to deal with my ‘D’, one-on-one.
She gave me the strength to find my own way,
It’s because of mom’s love that I’m healthy today.

My life is a blessing despite having ‘D’,
It’s a lifetime of learning that’s worked well for me.
The things I have learned and the battles I’ve won,
Are because of my parents and their love for their son.
