My name is Gary. I am a juvenile-onset Type-1 diabetic. I was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 10. I have been diabetic now for 34 years.
I created this web site for the purpose of expressing my thoughts and feelings about diabetes with others. It's my hope that they will begin to understand a little about what we deal with every day of our lives. Our diabetes not only effects us as individuals, it effects every person in our lives in some way or another.
I hope my poems and thoughts help to open up the dialogue between those who have trouble talking about their diabetes with the people they care about, and the people who care about them.
For many of you, learning and coping with diabetes is a new and frustrating task. For some of us, it's old and as much a part of our life as walking and breathing. Even though we are all challenged with managing our diabetes, there is hope for the future - hope that may help us live long and complication-free lives, or even see a cure. For all that the researchers and doctors are doing for us, we must do our part to take care of ourselves, for a cure will do us no good if we neglect to take care of our diabetes and are not here to see it.
With the start of each new day, let's all renew our commitment to our diabetes. We don't have to be a slave to our diabetes, but we do need to manage it to the best of our ability. We need to care about our diabetes for our parents, our friends, and all who love and care about us and want us to be happy and healthy. Most of all we need to care for ourselves.
You have the opportunity to let people see that diabetes can't stop us from our goals and our dreams. WE are the warriors on the front line of this battle...and we WILL win this fight!
Your friend,
Gary
