Gary,
Vernita is a friend and gave me your web site address. We are raising a diabetic Type 1 grandchild (Blayne, who just turned 6, diagnosed and began insulin at 4 1/2). We enjoyed your poems very much, please keep up the good work for all the people (small and large) that have "D" as their partner throughout life.

Gary it is me! We'll the first one really hit home and I am really sorry for being such a pain about finding your poems. The poem ‘They say’ is my son right now, and I just hope that what I teach him is all help and he will grow-up and realize that as a single mom I am trying my best.
Thanks Again

I loved your poems, they truly touched my heart. My son was diagnosed last year, at age 13, with Type 1. Your two poems "They say" and "Before" really hit home.
Keep writing!!!!!

That was wonderful. I sat here and cried. Thank you for the heart and sole you put into this site. My daughter is Type 1, since Feb. 11, 2000. This is all new to us so I'm still learning everything. Please do more. I printed them. I hope you do not mind. I want to save them for Brittany. She is 8 and I think she will enjoy them more when she is a little older. I also want to start a support group and share them there. If that is okay please reply back. You do beautiful work.
Thanks again, Gina (Brittany's mom)

I can't write much at this time. I copied a couple of poems to tuck into Joseph's room. He reminded me last summer after diagnosed 7/99 that he had never ridden a roller coaster. Searching was the second one. Even though the struggle is huge, thank you. I know our pain is understood and shared.

Dear Gary
Just wanted to tell you that at last I got to your room to read the poems! They are great. I like the one 'Acceptance' the most. Some I like better than others. You've done a great job.
Bye

Gary,
Your poetry has touched my heart. You are a very gifted writer. As I read each one I cried a little more. You have experienced so much in your life, that so many of us will be experiencing with diabetes. I try not to let my son know how worried I am, or how serious this is, and your writings have just reinforced that more to me. How do you reassure a child that he can live a normal life? How do you not make them feel different at a ball game? How do you explain to them why they can't spend the night with a friend? How do you not get upset when your child isn't invited to an outing because the parents are afraid of the responsibility of a Diabetic child?
Thanks again - for the excellent poetry. Every writing hit home!

Dear Gary,
I've surfed over to the Children With Diabetes Chat Room, and have seen you there many times but never talked to you. I checked out your site and am so happy I did! The poem for Jessica just blew me away! It as very hard to read through blurred vision due to the tears!! My daughter, Lauren, was dx'd 10/29/96 at the age of 6 with type 1. It has been a difficult row to hoe!! But we keep on going, not much else we can do!!! Right?! I wanted to thank you for the words of encouragement.
And the next time I'm on Children with diabetes chat room, I will say Hi!!! I'm always afraid to write anything because it feels like everyone there already knows everyone else and I'm the new comer to the block!! I don't know why I feel that way? Crazy, huh?! Anyways, thank you again and have a great day.
Sincerely, Kate
"D" Poetry Page by: Ann
Dear Gary,
I just visited your page and want to thank you so much. We have been dealing with 'D' since 3/12/2000. Our 14 year old son, Andrew, has got Type 1… I think you are doing a great job with your poetry and just want to say "thank You" from a reasonably new "D" parent. Have a blessed day.

Hi! Gary
How are you doing? I really enjoyed your poems and thoughts on diabetes. They are very educational and heart-warming, stuff that comes straight from the heart. You are indeed a very gifted and courageous person. It takes a courageous person to share about an illness that has so many negatives impacts. Let me introduce myself: I am a Cree Indian from Northern Quebec in Canada from a place called Chisasibi (means 'big river'). I work as a Health Promotion Officer for the Public Health Team of the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay. There are about 15,000 Crees within the Cree Nation, which has 9 communities. It was devastating when we encountered huge numbers of people diagnosed with diabetes type 2, of course there are many with type 1 also. The number has increased to 840 and it is very scary but we know we can do something about it. Every year we have awareness and educational campaigns on the 'D' (as you call it - I like that.) but I couldn't help but think about the all-positive impacts could be accomplished from your poems and stories. I am asking you if it would be possible to use your material in our campaigns. We will not alter the content in anyway. I believe that your poems and stories will have a positive and seed-planting effect on everyone especially our young people which is about 65% (under 25) of our total population. So please consider this opportunity and get back to me at my e-mail address. Well, Gary, I encourage you to continue writing, you will continue to touch, help and make others understand the 'D'.
Take good care and may only good spirits guide you and your family each day.
Yours truly, George L. Diamond, Health Promotion Officer

I can not begin to tell you how your poetry has touched my heart. My son, Jason, age 19, was diagnosed at age 5. Your poetry has made me laugh, smile and cry, all at the same time. I'm going to forward your "words" to my son and hope that they will let him know that he is NOT alone.
Gary, thank you again.

Thank you by: Tina
Hi Gary,
My name is Tina. I am a mom of a newly diagnosed type 1 child, this past Oct. 2000. My daughter is 7yrs.old and is doing well. We are adapting to our new world with every day. I was happy to see the emotions you expressed were ones we hit on on a daily basis. I came to the Poem for Jessica, Angel, and I fell apart. I was so comforted to see you finish it with the fact Jessica does live her life and grow up happy. I cannot Thank You enough for just that poem alone. We are so lost sometimes with all the newness and wanting answers when there are none, that we have to take days off from even talking about diabetes. She loves our support group and hates the doctor (because he told her she was diabetic and she would like to think he is a liar). My husband and I have tried to keep everything as close to the same as possible. She is a Very Brave little girl. We too will survive this "D" and pray she stays healthy along the way.
Again, Thank You for being the voice and sharing a part of you. I hope to chat with you sometime in the Children with Diabetes chat room.
Have a Great Day! Tina :~)
